The Huddersfield  Badminton League annual tournaments were held on Sunday 30th October 2011 and for the first time, cash prizes were provided for winners and runners up thanks to sponsorship from local Estate Agents,  Gallery @HD1.

Additionally, international All England Gold Medallist (2005) and former World & Commonwealth Games Champion (2006), Nathan Robertson attended the tournament to present the trophies to the delight of the players, in particular to the junior players, many of whom were playing in the tournament for the first time.

The tournament was held for the 2nd year running at Whitcliffe Mount Leisure Centre and had an increased number of entries this year with ages ranging from 12 years old to 60.

The Mens A Section Semi-Finals saw Andy Ward and Doug Fletcher (Scr) unexpectedly beaten comfortably at 21-12 by David Little and Alan Shaw (+5) and in the second semi-final, youngsters Billy Prady and Oliver Platt (+7) again surprisingly convincingly beat Andy Jones and Dave Walker (Scr) 21-15.

The Final saw Billy Prady and Oliver Platt (+6) defeat the more experienced pair of David Little and Alan Shaw (Scr) in two ends at 21-19 and 21-12.

Billy and Oliver were the title holders of the B Section last year but, having improved and gained more experience this past year, have now moved up into the A Section to win another title.

In the Men's B Section, three juniors won through to the final play off, namely Jo Crosfield, Simon Gott and Michael Silvester -  members of The Eagles Junior Badminton Club and Brighouse Badminton Club.  The fourth finalist was Matthew Hunt, one of the main organizers responsible for setting up and running the Brighouse Junior Club.

Crosfield and Gott (+3) beat Hunt and Silvester (Scr) in 2 straight sets at 21-12, 21-13.

In the Ladies Section A Semi Final, Emily Crowther and Hayley Smith (+10) narrowly lost out to Rachel Fay and Helen Calverley (-3) at  21-18 with Nickly Faulkner and Cath Bentley (+10) also narrowly missing out in the other semi-final to Sam Jessop and Helen Fay(-3) at 21-19.

The Final saw a mother and daughter battle when Rachel Fay and Helen Calverley (-3) took on Helen Fay and Sam Jessop (+6) with Rachel beating her mother Helen in 3 sets at 21-16, 18-21, 21-10.

This was Rachel's 2nd title of the day, having also won the Mixed.

In the Ladies B Section, semi-finalists were Gail Gerrard (Scr) and Lisa Paul versus Lisa Jones and Latika Rodway (+5) with Gerrard and Paul narrowly winning 21-19.

In the second semi-final Judy Vickerman and Debbie Jackson (Scr) fought hard to beat Sue Powell and Rosina Costello (+8) by 21-15.

In the Final, Judy Vickerman and Debbie Jackson (Scr) narrowly beat Gail Gerrard and Lisa Paul (+1) in 3 ends,  21-10, 19-21, 21-19.

In the Mixed A Section semi-finals, husband and wife partnership of Hadrian and Sarah Clarke, playing off scratch, were up against another husband and wife partnership of David and Jayne Walker, playing off +2. The Clarkes played well to win 21-15 and move into the Final.

In the second semi final, Andy Ward and Rachel Fay were playing off scratch but still managed to beat James Grist and Helen Pearman playing off +4, by 21-14.

The 'A' Section Final of the Clarkes(Scr) versus Ward and Fay (+3) was a close fought, 3-ended game of 21-16, 19-21, 21-16 with Andy Ward and Rachel Fay triumphing over the Clarkes.

In the Mixed B Section 1st Round, where half the players were Juniors, the scores were incredibly close.

Through to the semi finals were Sarah Hewitt and James Austerberry (Scr)  versus Gail Gerrard and 12-year old Bradley Gerrard Harrison (+10) who won 21-18 to reach the Final and become probably the youngest player to have reached a Final. 

The second semi finalists were Nitin Anand and Latika Rodway (+6) versus James Firth and Lisa Paul (+6), with Paul and Firth snatching victory to win at 21-19.and make up the Final against Gail Gerrard and Bradley Gerrard Harrison.

The Final was extremely close but the Gerrards (+10) just pulled it off against Paul and Firth (+6) at 21-16, 20-21, 21-18.
